Working Equitation is a competitive equestrian sport that combines skills used in daily farm work, such as herding, cutting cattle, and navigating obstacles, with dressage-style riding.

Working Equitation competitions consist of four phases, each designed to test the horse and rider's skills and abilities:

  1. Dressage: In the first phase, riders perform a dressage test that evaluates the horse's obedience, suppleness, and responsiveness to the rider's aids.

  2. Ease of Handling: In this phase, riders navigate a course of obstacles, such as gates, bridges, and barrels, that simulate the challenges encountered in ranch/field work.

  3. Speed: The third phase is a timed event that requires the rider to complete a course of obstacles as quickly as possible while still maintaining accuracy and control.

  4. Cattle Handling: In the final phase, riders must demonstrate their ability to work with cattle, such as separating or guiding, and eventually penning the selected cow. This phase is not always offered, and if offered it is not always required for the horse rider pair to exhibit in.

Working Equitation is a growing sport around the world and has several national and international competitions, including a World Championship that occurs every four years. It is an exciting and challenging sport that requires a high level of horsemanship, athleticism, and teamwork between horse and rider.
